Choosing The Right Kitchen Cabinet

Perhaps the kitchen can be considered as one of the busiest rooms of the house; therefore, it is important to make sure that we are comfortable at our workspace to be efficient when preparing meals for the whole family.

Organizing can be a real exhausting task if we don’t have enough storage for each utensil and appliance in the kitchen, that’s why finding the right kitchen cabinets for our specific needs is essential in keeping our kitchen clutter-free.

Types of kitchen cabinets:

  • Stock kitchen cabinets - come in standard sizes — are displayed in shops, and ready for installation.
  • Custom kitchen cabinets - built specifically for your appliances and storage needs.

There are different types of materials for kitchen cabinets.

Woods such as: Oak, Mahogany, Maple, Hickory, Cherry, and Walnut.          Metals and laminated materials are also commonly used.

Factors to consider when choosing the right kitchen cabinet:

  • Budget - Other things to consider will depend upon your budget. Custom kitchen cabinets are costly than stock cabinets, but satisfaction is more guaranteed since it is tailor-made according to the size and style you want. While stock kitchen cabinets come in standard sizes because they are mass produced, therefore it’s cheaper. But you can also spot some high-quality stock cabinets — you just have to be keen when choosing.
  • Size- We should also consider this when finding the right kitchen cabinet since it should always be according to the size of your kitchen. Kitchens having cabinets that almost occupy the whole area not just tends to look crowded, but also suppresses ventilation of the area.
  • Functionality - Aside from having enough kitchen cabinet shelves, it should also be sturdy to support the load, and durable enough to handle years of use.
  • Style - Aside from the functionality, we should also consider its appearance since it is best to choose a kitchen cabinet that coordinates well with the style of your home. Good style and color creates good mood.

Whether you end up buying Stocks Cabinets or have it custom built for your kitchen. There are still basic mistakes that anyone can only notice after using it for a while.

  • The height of the upper kitchen cabinet - it should be mounted on the wall according to the height of the people who will use it more often, so they can easily reach commonly used utensils without always having to use a stool.
  • The kitchen cabinet handle - unbelievable, but there are still handles that are placed in the middle of the kitchen cabinet doors. Again, people have to use a stool just to be able to reach the handle alone. It should always be placed within arm’s reach, which is at the bottom part of the cabinet door.
  • Too deep or wide lower kitchen cabinet shelves or drawers - If it is too deep or wide, you tend to place things one after another. You would have to take utensils out one by one just to be able to find what you need. We are in a hurry in most cases, so it’s not impossible that we would end up messing everything when looking for a certain utensil. Drawers should neither be too deep nor wide for easy selection.

How To Build Kitchen Cabinets

I have worked as a “Kitchen Designer” for Home Depot for a couple of years, and let ME tell YOU that there are many cabinet options on the market that won’t make you break the bank!

First of all, let me introduce you to a product I learned about;

RTA Cabinetry – Ready to assemble, all wood, with a large variety of door styles and wood options to choose from. Try this link to get a look at some of the considerations you need to evaluate.

http://www.rtacabinethub.com/ready-to-assemble-kitchen.html

Prices are based on the type of wood the cabinets are made from, and some of the usual candidates are:

Maple – a medium light color wood, very smooth with an even grain. Many people love the fact that Maples color is consistent, that is because maples mineral absorption is not very visible, however there is some, and it will affect stain absorption.

Ballpark for a 10’x10’ area of RTA maple cabinets – around $2,000 (only the cabinets, not installation)

Oak – a light color wood, well known and loved for its BOLD swirling grain, it is a classic in Americana Style. Very strong, it can have color variations within planks which will affect stain absorption. Many people love this characteristic, feeling it adds a rustic charm.

Ballpark for a 10’x10’ area of RTA Oak cabinets – around $1,500

Hickory – This one is MY VERY FAVORITE! The hardest of the hardwoods, its color variations go from the palest of tans, to the darkest of cocoa browns. With swirling, arched, and sometimes combined patterns, people like me who love the random beauty will frequently opt for a clear or very lightly tinted stain.

Ballpark for a 10’x10’ area of RTA Hickory cabinets – around $ 2,000

Cherry – Mid tone in color, warm, with reddish tints. Cherry richens and darkens over time, and its’ even graining makes it a great choice with a wide and elegant array of colors.

Ballpark for a 10’x10’ area of RTA Cherry cabinets – around $2,000

RTA cabinets are also available at:

http://www.homedepot.com/Kitchen-Cabinets/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5Zas87/h_d2/Navigation?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Notice I stated only “ballpark” figures. Cabinets are not all the same, and a basic hanging wall cabinet is less costly than a base (on the floor) cabinet, a corner cabinet (wall or floor) and so on.

Another factor to consider in deciding which direction to go with your dream of a new kitchen cabinet project is:

Installation – This is not a project for a beginner. Even an intermediate! Installing cabinets is a precise art. It involves quite a bit of physical strength. Really consider having a professional handle this job. The angles of the home, (they have CHANGED! Homes “settle” into the ground as they age, there is no such thing as a plumb line in an older home)

Want another ballpark? Figure you will spend as much on the installation as you do on your new cabinets.

So, figure for new cabinets in a 10’x10’ space, you will spend about $5,000 if you have a Pro install for you.

More than you want to spend? My next article, “Reface Your Kitchen Cabinets” may be the home run for YOU!

Kitchen Cabinet Ideas that Give Your Home Character

This is for my examiner.com application, syncronox@gmail.com

I was recently going through my kitchen with my wife, trying to think of ways to enhance our kitchen a bit. We often find that our spices aren’t as easy to get to when we need them, and we could use a little more cabinet space. The problem is, of course, we don’t live in a mansion and don’t exactly have a huge kitchen. We’re working with limited space, but we still want to get the most out of our kitchen.

What I found was that there are a number of things I could add to what I already have in my kitchen without taking up a lot of space– all I had to do was think of some creative kitchen cabinet ideas.

For example, when it came to the issue with spice availability, I found the Rev-A-Shelf Adjustable Door Mount Spice Rack (http://www.lowes.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&cId=SEARCH&productId=3107507&cm_mmc=SCE_gps-_-gps-_-gps-_-Rev-A-Shelf%20Adjustable%20Door%20Mount%20Spice%20Rack%204ASR-15) to be exactly what I was looking for. Not only did it go perfectly with the kitchen cabinets already around my stove, but it didn’t take up any extra room. It makes spices much easier to grab and in turn makes me enjoy cooking more. It’s one of those kitchen cabinet ideas that makes sense in that it accomplishes a lot without requiring much input. Learn more about this at The Office Hub.

I still needed some kitchen cabinet ideas to combat my lack of counter and cabinet space. Thankfully, the OIA Bamboo Kitchen Cart and Cabinet (http://www.amazon.com/Bamboo-Kitchen-Stainless-Natural-Finish/dp/B001H35OF0) was there to save the day. Not only does it look fantastic with bamboo and stainless steel, but it actually has a functional “leg up” over installed counter or cabinet space in my book. This is because you can move the cabinet around with you, giving you access to whatever you need exactly where you need it. I love that added versatility, and it’s one of the reasons why you’ll likely hear me rave about islands and kitchen carts a lot.

If you’re looking to upgrade the appearance and function of your kitchen but you don’t have the money to invest in a full-on remodel, these are a couple of kitchen cabinet ideas to get the most out of what you already have. In my opinion, using something like a hanging cabinet rack or kitchen cart is a much better investment for smaller kitchens than a full remodel, and it can definitely be a lot more gentle on your wallet.

RTA Cabinets: Ready To Assemble Kitchen Cabinets

Ready to assemble cabinetry, RTA is the term used for ease of reference throughout the construction industry, is a MAJOR contribution to the Do It Yourself community and the construction industry as well.

In a nutshell, RTA cabinets are units that are packaged together, with all the components for one cabinet contained in one package. Sides, floor, shelving and shelf pins, door, drawer and drawer glides are included. Hardware such as handles and drawer pulls are usually not, however, but there is a large variety of such items available at retailers like Home Depot, Lowes, and other major home improvement centers. Selecting cabinets for your kitchen remodel is a somewhat technical decision, involving more than simply selecting a wood, stain, and door style. By choosing to gather information before you make that decision, will make it an easier one, if not less technical.

Construction and quality issues, purchase options (online, major retailer, from a manufacturer), are a vital part of your descision regarding which option you choose, since cabinets can easily consume half of your budget for the project, it makes sense to explore the different options available, becoming a bit of an expert yourself.

REMEMBER that your ultimate goal is a consideration. Do you intend to stay in your home for the next 20 years? 10 years? Or are you preparing to sell, and want to maximize the selling price? If the last is so, consider the point that it is “the kitchen and bathrooms that sell a house”,  and be prepared to invest time and money into them. You will never regret it. Some survey’s say that a seller can increase the purchase price by double the amount spent to upgrade.

Most people believe that fine cabinetry is assembled using solid wood planks, joined together to create a box that will hold shelves, and a door to complete. This is inaccurate because ALL cabinet “boxes” are constructed out of plywood. Contrary to what you may think, plywood is strong, flexible enough to work with, and enduring. Solid wood planks will warp, especially quickly in a wet environment, such as a steamy bathroom or aromatic kitchen.

Plywood, used extensively today in construction all over the world, was invented by the Egyptians about 3,000 years ago, when there was a shortage of quality wood. They decided to glue a thin veneer of a high quality product to a lesser quality one. The method used today was invented by Emmanual Nobel, father of the inventor of dynamite Alfred Nobel. Al recognized that several layers of strong wood glued together would be stronger than one thick layer of wood. His concept is used the world over today.

KraftMaid Cabinets Reviews

Kraftmaid Cabinet reviews are in! As they have for 40 years, homeowners, contractors and designers have almost unanimously agreed that their awesome craftsmanship, selection, and lovely natural woods combine to create a superlative product.

Remodeling your kitchen can be a daunting project. There are many considerations, and the cabinetmakers all seem to speak a different language than we mere mortals. I’m here to help YOU take the mystery out of the process, and allow you to make the informed choice, while added thousands of dollars above what you pay to the value of your home.

Ok, lets dive right in.

Naturally you will want to get an idea of what you are facing before actually hitting the street, so I recommend you visit Home Depots fully interactive web site, where you will see the types of modern and accessorized cabinets are available, and get some basic information about cost. You may find,  however,  that it can be difficult to get pricing, since the price-tag of a wholly redone kitchen is likely to run in excess of $10,000. However, armed with good information, that price tag should include the installation! And naturally, Home Depot offers free, human design service for the project. (Someone you can ask questions of, expect information from, and is on top of the latest convenient features)

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Navigation?storeId=10051&categoryID=503143&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&selectedCatgry=SEARCH%20ALL&navFlow=3&Ntpc=1&searchRedirect=kraftmaid&cm_sp=searchredirect-_-kitchen_cabinet_LP-_-x-_-x&Nu=P_PARENT_ID&Ntpr=1&redAB=A&locStoreNum=933

Lowes, another leading retailer who offers free design services, also has a site, somewhat less entertaining / informative than HD’s, entitled a Virtual Room Designer, it is also a good site to visit while in the learning to “speak the lingo” stage of Your Kitchen Remodel.

http://www.lowes.com/cd_virtual+room+designer_189310537_

Try this link, click around a bit, and remember that both giant retailers will have special deals running at the same time. In other words, if Home Depot is offering 10% off the price of semi custom Kraftmaid Cabinets, Lowes will be also. Remember to ask your kitchen designer if such a promotion is coming up, and time your project to coincide with it. They are run at minimum annually.

A quick way to judge the quality of the cabinets is to take a look at the drawers. Most specifically, where the parts of the wood creating the drawers meet. A quality item will be “dovetailed” together, in addition to carpenters glue. A dovetail join looks like interlocking puzzle pieces and is a dead giveaway that the item was made with care and an eye to the future.

Kraftmaid cabinets constantly come in on top in all of the surveys I have visited. Consumers, contractors, and reviewers all agree that their quality of construction is among the very best available, and their line diverse and has something for EVERYONE.

The Basic Base Cabinet – all are 34 ½ inches tall for kitchen units. Vanity and office bases are shorter. Widths range from 9 inches, to 42 inches, and have innovative accessories to make them very functional. Thomasville Kitchen Cabinets

When you are looking for cabinets, the brand of cabinetry can be very important. A good brand of cabinets would be thomasville cabinets or as they are called, thomasville kitchen cabinets.

Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets

It can sometimes be a bit of a pain for an outdoor chef to find the appropriate outdoor analogue to the indoor kitchen amenities he or she is so accustomed to using. Up until recently, the best outdoor kitchen cabinets were generally nothing but a simple and ugly sheet-metal box, seriously lacking the pizzazz of regular kitchen cabinets. The truth is that most manufacturers for items like cabinets really focus their attention on indoor cabinet needs, and seldom is there a lot of interest in the needs of outdoor cooks. However, there are a number of quality manufacturers out there who are starting to embrace this outdoor market, and the result is a better selection of great outdoor kitchen cabinets that are as attractive as they are functional. After researching the available options, I’ve compiled a list of the three best outdoor kitchen cabinets out there to help you make your decision.

1- The ODK 902 by A & B Accessories

While this may be the most obscure selection on the list (and definitely not the biggest name), it is my personal favorite from this list of the best outdoor kitchen cabinets. Not only is it highly functional, but it exemplifies that great mixture between form and function that can be attained when companies put the right amount of thought into their design. Not only does it have a great wooden look to it, but it holds up great under weathering. What this means is that it won’t just keep your stuff together neatly, but it’ll look great while it’s doing it.

2- Weber Genesis Grill center Accessory Cabinets

The Weber name is one of the most trusted in outdoor cooking, and that’s a reputation that is not won easily. With that name behind them, these cabinets could be made out of tinfoil and sell well, so it’s good to know that Weber put the necessary time in to make them live up to that name. They are stainless steel all around, but are brushed and look very attractive when hooked up to your grill. They are easy to use with other grill centers other than Weber, making them even more versatile. If you like the “easy to maintain” feel of stainles steel, then these may be the best outdoor kitchen cabinets for you.

3- The KitchenAid Stainless Steel Access Cabinet

This is definitely the most affordable of the cabinets on this list, but that doesn’t mean that it’s any less attractive or functional than the others. In fact, I think that the extra removable storage on the door makes these cabinets a little more functional than their more expensive siblings. By providing you with a means to enhance your storage capability, these drawers are able to make cooking outdoors just as easy as cooking indoors. They are very attractive, and they won’t set your bank account on fire when you pay the bill. All around, this is a great cabinet for those looking to enhance their storage while sticking to a budget.

No matter what type of outdoor kitchen cabinets you use, the main thing you’ll need to consider is style. It’s pretty hard to mess up an outdoor cabinet, so you’ll probably find yourself leaning toward whatever model looks better in your backyard. Whether you have a good budget to work with or not, there is something out there that will perfectly match your specifications. This is my list of the best outdoor kitchen cabinets out there, but what are your thoughts? Have you had better luck with other manufacturers or models? If so, let me know and I might even review them here later.

Home Depot Kitchen Cabinets: The Best Kitchen Cabinets By Home Depot

If you’re looking to upgrade your kitchen cabinetry, there are definitely a number of benefits to shopping at the Home Depot. Home Depot kitchen cabinets not only provide a high range of choices, but they are also very cost effective and long lasting. If you want to make sure you go into your search for Home Depot kitchen cabinets armed with a little extra info, I’ve compiled a list of three really great options for Home Depot kitchen cabinets and the various features that make them stand out.

  1. Catskill Craftsmen Super Island Plus 44 in. Kitchen Island (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100476716&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=100476716&ci_src=14110944&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D29X-_-100476716&locStoreNum=4003)

In general, kitchen islands are some of the best space savers out there. They require very little work to assemble, they can be moved anywhere you need them, they can have a large amount of storage space, and they actually act as an “extra” counter-top to enhance your counter-space. When you start getting into the class of the Catskill Craftsmen Super Island Plus, all those features get a little extra kick upwards. Its larger size allows you to get a lot more storage use out of it than with other kitchen islands, and it just plain looks great with any kitchen décor. It’s constructed of Yellow Birch for durability, and two of its wheels lock to ensure it’ll stay where you want it. That locking mechanism is an important thing to look for with a kitchen island, and is often overlooked by prospective buyers. Even without the enhancements of this model, the huge storage capacity alone would qualify it for any list of great Home Depot kitchen cabinets.

  1. American Classics 36 in. Lazy Susan Base Cabinet (http://www.homedepot.com/Kitchen/h_d1/N-5yc1vZar4i/R-202519711/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053)

If you’re looking for something a little more “generic” that won’t draw attention to itself in either a negative or positive light, then you should consider a base cabinet model. The American Classics Lazy Susan cabinet is a great way to expand your storage space while adding a little creative flair to your kitchen. Most people have an unused corner space that is rife for use as a cabinet add on, and a Lazy Susan is a great way to get the most out of that limited space. The American Classics Lazy Susan is a cost effective and durable choice, made of durable maple and .75” thick shelving. It’s a great way to get an attractive and supremely functional piece of hardware, and is an elegant (though understated) ambassador for the simplistic function of Home Depot kitchen cabinets.

  1. Catskill Craftsmen 30-1/4 in. Hardwood Natural Storage Cabinet (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/QuickViewService?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&R=100476702&catEntryId=100476702)

The second entry of Catskill Craftsmen on this list is no accident, since they’re a well known manufacturer of quality kitchen hardware. The Catskill Craftsmen Hardwood Natural Storage Cabinet is not exception to this rule, and provides a classically functional cabinet piece. The benefits of the storage cabinet are that it is very easy to put together, and can be placed easily wherever you need it. The cabinet is made from sustainably harvested North American hardwoods, so it’s an American product that is built of very tough wood. Like most things from Catskill Craftsmen, it’s very much an heirloom piece that will really last a while.

No matter what you’re looking for, you can find it at Home Depot. With a great selection at a great price, it’s pretty hard to beat Home Depot kitchen cabinets. If you want to make sure that you get something good the first time around, and that you won’t have to keep upgrading every few years, buy a well-built, timelessly attractive piece like the ones in this list.
