Keeping your wood storage cabinets in top form is important to ensure they serve you longer while still looking good and contributing to your home’s beautiful decor. Have a strict and thorough cleaning schedule followed by regular checkups and maintenance sessions during which you will repair any broken or damaged parts before they grow any further.
Cleaning Wooden Storage Cabinets
First, you should know that quick action should be taken when small accidents occur. Whenever a spill happens, ensure it is cleaned up right away. If you don’t, the liquids from the spill seep into the wood and cause unsightly stains while contributing to rotting in the wood.
Second, remember that wood and water do not go very well in many cases. Therefore, try to keep contact between your wooden storage cabinets and water to a minimum. After wiping with a damp cloth, remember to wipe off any excess moisture with a dry cloth.
So how and what do you use to clean?
1. Homemade solutions you can use are water + vinegar, water + a mild dishwashing liquid or even lemon juice + soda. These kinds of mixtures are great at getting oil and grease off while still remaining mild on the wood.
2. Store-bought solutions come in the form of wood cleaning products that are specially made for different purposes and may be a bit more costly. You should always read the instructions on the products’ labels to ensure you do not use the wrong chemical or end up using too much of it.
3. Get some lemon oil which you can use after each period of about six months to improve the wood’s finish. Do not use it too often as its oils may damage the wood.
4. Invest in some wood polish as some brands not only clean and improve the look of wooden storage cabinets, they also have active chemicals in them which help to treat and protect the wood from insects, moisture, and warping or breaking.
5. Always remember to wipe wood with a soft cloth or sponge and not with rough brushes or steel wool. Follow the grain as you wipe to avoid forming marks and scratches.
Maintaining Wooden Storage Cabinets
1. For scratches, there are a variety of scratch-cover products available in stores. Just buy one and keep it handy.
2. Check for loose or squeaky handles and hinges and keep them oiled. If you need to, use a screw driver to tighten them.
3. Always use contact paper or old place mats inside the cabinets to protect them from contact with stored items which could leave stains or ugly rings on the wood.
